The ARC 1100 DICUT DISC wheel completes the Aero road wheel lineup by DT Swiss: it is characterized by the uniformity of the rim inner width and the design, both meticulously aligned to the existing Aero category. Construction

 

MATERIAL CONSTRUCTION

Engineered in-house and aerodynamically optimized by our aerodynamic partner Swiss Side, the ARC 1100 DICUT DISC is composed of eight equally sized and symmetrically aligned glued carbon pieces, containing high-quality carbon fibers. The woven carbon layup strengthens the material structure while the ultralight foam plate inside supports a high lateral and torsional stiffness.

RIM CONSTRUCTION

The disc wheel is shaped asymmetrically with a flat face on the drive side and a light convex face on the brake mounting side in order to handle the asymmetrically acting drive and braking forces, but also to meet the space requirement for the rear derailleur. The valve hole is covered with a smooth-transitioning lid to ensure optimal aerodynamics and to minimalize turbulences. It is opened and closed tool-free with a 90 degree rotation.

OUR FASTEST AERO WHEEL

Compared to an aerodynamically optimized deep section rim wheel, a disc wheel with its full cover is even more effective in acting like an airfoil. The airflow of the ARC 1100 DICUT DISC wheel flows along the rim surface as long as possible. In that way, the full cover prevents an “early” stalling and supports a calm, smooth and steady airflow behavior along the complete disc surface. The generated propulsion is thus higher and the resulting drag reduction in crosswinds more pronounced compared to the deep section rim wheel. Read more about translational drag and sailing effect.

 

Wind tunnel results

DT SWISS SETUP

Within the Aero lineup, a comparison was conducted between the two setups ARC 1100 DICUT 80/80 (front wheel/rear wheel) and the ARC 1100 DICUT 80/DISC. Using the ARC DISC wheel in the rear reduces the drag force resulting in a savings of 1.8 watts* in the needed weighted power to overcome the aerodynamic resistance of the bicycle. The 80/DISC setup shows a reduced drag level over the entire yaw angles (+20° to -20°) and an increased sailing effect at higher yaw angles of up to around 15°. These results demonstrate that this wheelset combination is the fastest setup among the DT Swiss Aero lineup.

COMPETITOR SETUP

The DT Swiss setup 80/DISC was tested against the Zipp 808/Disc Super 9. The results from the wind tunnel show that measurable advantages for the DT Swiss setup over the Zipp setup were achieved: the Zipp setup requires about 2 watts more than the DT Swiss setup to overcome the aerodynamic resistance of the bicycle. Therefore, the Zipp setup performs on the level of an ARC 80/80 setup.

In addition to excellent aerodynamic performance, the ARC 1100 DICUT DISC wheel is specifically engineered with sophisticated features that meet the today’s requirements of Aero bike frames in the cycling industry:

 

DISC BRAKE SYSTEM

The DT Swiss disc wheel is explicitly aligned for disc braking system only. The wider clearance gives the chance to fully exploit the construction of the disc wheel shape and its rim inner width. Learn more about the different brake systems.

COMPETITIVE WEIGHT

The ARC 1100 DICUT DISC, at 1100 g, is among others one of the lightest tubeless clincher disc wheel for disc brakes bikes. Considering the incorporated modern features of a wide rim width and a hooked rim, the wheel offers a competitive weight-performance ratio and makes use on slightly undulating courses possible.

WIDE RIM INNER WIDTH (20 MM)

Wider rim inner width combined with the mounting of wider tires are on trend in aero cycling and were specifically pursued in our development of the ARC 1100 DICUT DISC wheel.

TUBELESS CLINCHER

Rim width

THE WIDER RIM INNER WIDTH
OPTIMIZED FOR 28 MM TIRES

The trend of wider tires is discovered and preferred more and more in amateur and professional sports. The rim of the ARC 1100 DICUT DISC is specifically developed for 28 mm tires to take advantage of the optimal rolling resistance and high comfort while being less exposed to the frontal airflow.

 

ROLLING RESISTANCE

The compatibility of wider tires (25 mm - 32 mm) at a 20 mm rim inner width: As a result of the larger air volume, the tire can be ridden at a lower tire pressure without risking a pinch flat. As various published measurement results revealed, this lower tire pressure can reduce the rolling resistance on real road surfaces with their roughness. This is because the tire is more able to deform and thus to absorb shocks induced by the road surface. Read more about rolling resistance,

COMFORT

The light and stiff carbon frames of modern road bikes perform directly, transmitting impacts and vibrations of uneven road surfaces unhindered into the body. With a corresponding lower tire pressure, wider tires are able to counteract: through the larger air volume between the road and the rim, shocks and impacts are more cushioned, resulting in increased comfort for the rider.

Design

CUSTOMIZABLE DESIGN

The design of the ARC 1100 DICUT DISC is bold! Aligned with the design language, the disc wheel comes with a red vinyl decal embodying DT Swiss. It fits perfectly with the DT Swiss front wheels ARC 1100 DICUT. To match the wheel design to their bike, sticker variants in the colors, "gold", "chrome" and "black" are included for self-application.

THE CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY

HOOKED RIM

In terms of safety for bikes that require a relatively high pressure in combination with relatively wide tires, we are convinced that hooked rims are technically the optimal rim construction. The ARC 1100 DICUT DISC wheel optimized for 28 mm tires possesses a hooked rim design that holds the tire beads safely in place and lowers the risk of a tire blow-off due to inappropriate tire pressures. With the possibility of riding tubeless as well as tube type systems, the ARC 1100 DICUT DISC offers the rider the possibility to choose from a wide range of tires.

180 DICUT HUB WITH RATCHET EXP

The ARC 1100 DICUT DISC wheel is installed with a 180 DICUT hub with the Ratchet EXP System. The ultralight SINC ceramic bearings provide optimum rolling behavior in the hub. Thanks to the high quality EXP system, the increased bearing distance maximizes the reliability, leading to a longer life of the bearings. In addition, the straight spring evokes a more direct engagement, which reduces wear and requires fewer parts, whereby maintenance is simplified and a lower weight is achieved.
